The ruling class and the police and military strategists who serve them prefer the type of social movements orbiting nonprofit funding and academic career tracks to those rooted in the fighting capacity and care networks of the working and ‘surplus’ classes. Why is it that this ‘movement middle class’ of social workers, lawyers, nonprofit coordinators, teachers and professors have learned to disregard and fear working class autonomy and revolt, and, rather than fuel it, seeks to manage it?
This participatory workshop will cover counterinsurgency theory, exploring how capitalists, the police, and the military attempt to make social movements non-threatening. How careerism and resource hoarding, encouraged by a middle-class upbringing, follow us into movements. In response, we will discuss how to defect from state-friendly radicalism and redistribute money, risk and accountability. The workshop is participatory, practical, and social movement-focused, so bring your comrades!!!
