This event is the first in a three part series, reflecting on the struggles and tactics of the anti-road protest movement in the 90's.

Twyford Down Protests (1992–1994): The struggle against the M3 motorway extension through Twyford Down in Hampshire became a defining moment in the emergence of Britain’s modern road-protest and direct-action movement.

The workshop will include reflections from Helen Beynon, author of, 'Twyford Rising', an oral history as well as the opportunity to explore the eco-action archive, with materials detailing Twyford as one of a constellation of protests from the 90’s against the commodification of rural and urban space. The event will centre the voices of many of those involved, along with a discussion on the lasting impact of the protests.

In Helen’s words ‘the anti-road protests of the 1990s defined a generation of activism, weaving together direct action, anti-capitalism, music and myths. The impact of those protests is still felt today, and this talk will look at their starting point, at Twyford Down, where an English hill was removed to make way for a motorway.’
